Two different things are called bosses

This is worth settling before anything else, because the two get mixed together constantly and the advice for one is useless for the other.

The Rift boss is a genuine boss fight. You enter it through a portal, several players fight it together, it has a health bar and a timer, and you can kill it. Killing it is how you earn Boss Tokens and Rift eggs.

The biome guardians are the monsters that live in each of the ten biomes. They chase you while you are carrying an egg and take it back if they catch you. They have no health bar. You cannot kill them, and no amount of Speed makes them disappear — the only counter is being faster than they are, which is what the biome table exists to plan for. Most of the popular "how to remove every boss" videos are about these, and every method in them is a glitch that gets patched.

How to find a rift

Rifts open at random points on the map as purple portals. There is no fixed spawn, no minimap marker and no announcement beyond the cutscene that plays when you first join after the update. Finding one means walking the map and watching for the colour.

Touching the portal teleports you straight into the arena. You do not need a minimum Speed, an item or a party — anyone can enter, which makes the boss fight the one piece of endgame content in Steal An Egg a new account can take part in on day one. Your Speed does not help you inside either; the fight is about positioning, not movement.

How the boss fight actually works

The fight looks like a damage race and is not one. Crystals light up around the arena, and breaking a lit crystal is what drains the boss health bar. Hitting the boss directly registers, but does so little that groups who spend the whole fight on it run the clock down. Every recording we watched follows the same shape: a slow first minute while people work out what the crystals are for, then a fast finish once they do.

Crystals come in waves. Clearing the set on screen does not end the fight — a new set spawns shortly after, and the cycle repeats until the boss is down. A broken crystal does not come back, so damage on one is never wasted, and two players hitting the same crystal is faster than two players splitting up.

The one attack that reliably kills is the red marking the boss puts on the floor, described as a circle in some recordings and as lines in others. Walk out of it. It is survivable to be clipped by it at full health, and it is the only thing in the fight most players die to.

Dying is not a run-ender. You respawn quickly, at full health, still inside the fight — one player in our sources deliberately died to reset their health bar and carried on. Your hits also have a short cooldown, so holding the attack button does nothing that timing it does not.

Weapons vary — the starter is a baseball bat and rarer ones drop from the fight and the eggs. Whether they actually do more damage is an open question: two of the players we watched said outright that they could not tell. We are not going to publish a damage table until someone measures one.

Boss Mastery and what each kill unlocks

Boss Mastery is the progress track on the right of the screen. Each boss you kill is worth one point, and rewards sit at kill thresholds along it rather than dropping from the boss directly. This is the reason to keep fighting after your first kill.

The two ends of the track are solid: three kills for a Rift Born Egg, thirty for a mutated egg that cycles between two types. The tiers in between definitely exist — a 50% Boss Token boost and a Rift Beast Egg are both visible on the track — but the kill counts attached to them were not readable in any recording, and we would rather leave a gap than guess a number.

What Boss Tokens buy

Boss Tokens drop from kills and are spent in the shop inside the rift. There is no way to buy them with in-game cash, which makes fighting the only source.

The mutation consumable is the one worth saving for. It applies the Fractured mutation to a pet you already own, which makes it the first mutation in the game that does not depend on what hatches — the Rift update guide covers where it sits against the five mutations that do.

There is also an exchange inside the rift, separate from the token shop, where pets are submitted for eggs you cannot get elsewhere. One walkthrough reads the rate as three pets for one egg. That is a single source and we have marked it accordingly.

The biome monsters, and why they are not boss fights

Every biome has a guardian. They are the other thing players mean by boss, and the practical problem they create is the opposite of the Rift boss: you are not trying to beat them, you are trying to not be caught by them while slowed down by an egg.

The Speed figure is the floor to enter, not the Speed to steal comfortably. Carrying an egg slows you, and a guardian that you can outrun empty-handed will catch you loaded. Are the biome guardians the same thing as the Rift boss?

No. Players call both of them bosses, but they are unrelated systems. The biome guardians — Chicken, Swan, Scorpion and the rest — patrol their biome and take your egg back if they catch you; they cannot be fought or killed. The Rift boss is an instanced fight you enter through a portal and can actually defeat.

Does the boss fight have a time limit?

Yes. A countdown runs during the fight — one recording shows seven minutes remaining partway through. What it starts at is not visible in any recording we have, so we are not going to give a number for it.
